Finding ourselves without kids one Saturday evening, my husband and I thought we'd try Houlihan's in Danbury but we left on notice of a half hour wait with no available seating area and the horribly loud noise there. We live in Brookfield so, in heading back to home base we opted for Marlowe's. The place was empty of other diners so we entered with concern about that, but we were pleasantly surprised at the end result of good food with very ample portions. Although the two waitresses appeared more a diner style, we render no complaint of service. A couple of other diners eventually arrived, but still it was a quiet Saturday night for this restaurant. Some things didn't quite fit with the overall atmosphere, like our salad dressing coming in small covered plastic disposable tub as one would find at a fast food place. The only music was whatever came from the adjoining bar area and I believe that must be a juke box because there would be moments of silence and then a variety of music styles playing - thankfully not too loud in the dining area.
For appetizers we ordered Brushetta -an excellent grilled toast with a heaping mix of tomato olive salada. It did suffer from excess salty flavor, but it was overall flavorful. The buffalo wings were large and meaty and their double dipped method of preparation produced wonderfully crisp wings. Our dinner salads were typical and tasty enough but I got Italian dressing instead of the balsamic I ordered - noticed after I poured it. For dinner my husband had the seafood pasta and believe me, the portion was not dwarfed by the very large bowl set before him. It contained an abundance of various seafoods - all of which make my husband jump for joy. The only thing not visible amid the mound of seafoods was the linguini - but even that was well portioned - it was just hidden underneath waiting to be dug out. I enjoyed the chicken marsala over penne - albeit more a brown saucy flavor and less of the anticipated marsala flavor. I love marsala dishes even though I dislike mushrooms - and this dish came with plenty of those. I don't mind because I simply set them aside and my husband always enjoys picking them off my plate. The meaty three boneless breasts of chicken were very moist and the penne was cooked al dente. Too full for dessert, we took home enough leftovers for another dinner at home. Considering the portions and leftovers, this makes for a very reasonable night out.
The sad thing is that this location has seen several restaurants pass through in our years in this area. The prior Blue Heron also had good food. I think it's non-central location may be the reason and what a shame because the good food and ample portions are things I believe most diners can delight in.
P.S. Someone recently told me they'd been to Marlowe's for Valentine's Day and it was very crowded - I was glad to hear that. My preference these days is to sample the local non-chain restaurants. I'm finding the chain restaurants are too predictable and, while certainly convenient at times, there's just nothing unique about them.
